With the year of the Dragon, expect the festivities to be extra outrageous. Founded in 1999, the Lunar New Year Parade has become the biggest New York winter tourist attraction and has surpassed other large scale Chinese New Year celebrations in San Francisco and Los Angeles. The pan-Asian parade features performers and organizations from Korea, China, Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia. It will include musicians, acrobats, vibrant floats, beauty queens, as well as dragon and lion dancers. There will be cultural performances on the floats and special guest like celebrities and elected officials will make appearances. In total, expect to see about 5,000 individuals marching in the parade.
This year, the Lunar New Year Parade and Festival will take place on Sunday the 29th from 11:30 am-4:00pm. The parade starts at 1:00pm at Mott Street and goes through all main streets of Chinatown. Afterwards, enjoy some tasty treats at the outdoor cultural festival located on Sara Roosevelt Park (Canal St & Forsyth St).
As another option, you might also want to check out the Lunar New Year Dance on Saturday the 28th at the Winter Garden, World Financial Center-200 Vesey St. The Chinese cultural dances will run from 2:30-4:00pm.
